Remember that the idea is not to post ideas of contests that will only be fun for you, but that will be fun for the entire community. Be as specific as you can with your ideas as far as length of the contest (number of rounds or number of days), rules, contest judging, software that would be necessary to participate and/or judge, and any other information that needs to be given.

We may not take every suggestion, or we may choose to wait on a contest if it is too similar to one we have just finished, or we don't have a judge for it, or for any other reason.

Thanks for you help.

I had an idea for an NL contest that never got off the ground.

THEMING CONTEST

Track will be pre-fabricated by host so everyone has an equal head start. The track cannot be modified in any way or form. It is up to the contestant to design the station, supports, walkways, and park layout around the roller coaster. Terraforming is allowed.

Given the intensity of such a project, I will advise at least 3-4 months of working time. (i.e. I spent roughly 4 months on Immortal).

Judges will need to look for the following things:

> Ride safety: Will the riders lose an arm or leg when riding? Are the support adequate?
> Aesthetics: Do the supports or park layout detract from the look? Maybe that Eiffel Tower wasn't such a good idea.
> Theming: Have a crashed spaceship as a station? Queues going through rooms filled with explosive containers? WANT.

I was also thinking about an RCT3 high speed rail station buillding contest, but not only does that go against the "For everyone" idea, but also because I don't have the necessary materials for such a venture. :(

1. What about an RCT timeline park contest? Contestants would have numerous check-ins to show their timeline.
And that's not even in my favor cause i can't download any of them right now!

2. Download Extras coaster draft?
Three rounds.
Round one could be RCT2 coasters, Round 2 could be RCT3 coasters, and round 3 could be NL coasters!

3. On-ride picture/video contest.
I know this one might be harder to do, may cause trouble, and is subject to cheating, but it's worth a shot!

I Maybe the contestants can choose from multiple tracks and can change the type of coaster?

I agree that we need something that makes people use the DE, and it's easy to let the public vote on the entries that way. I can check with Matt about making a "Contest Submissions" category. We can just use the voting system there for the contest. Good submissions can be moved to the DE and bad ones can just be deleted.

I had thought about that, but then the problem arises: how do you ACCURATELY judge between two contestants if they are using two different prototypes?

The DE contest has a flaw in that participants need to have all the said skills. Note that skill in RCT2 is slightly different from skill in RCT3, and skill in NL is completely on a different plane of existence.

Lastly, I don't mean to back-mod, but don't double post.

Then there should be requirements for each of the prototypes. For example, For every coaster, you would need a custom station, some kind of custom MCBR theming, a building it must go through, a custom tunnel, etc...

...and why would it be necessary to enforce ALL of those exceptions when you can simply have the same bar of judgement with one base design?

It's not just a matter of the elements that constitute good theming--if you look carefully at most themed rides, it's the transitions between the elements, the straight stretch just before the loop, the gentle curve before the corkscrew, that require the most attention. You can't really theme a loop or a cobra roll. Given that, I doubt that even with the same elements and the same sequence, there is no true way to compare the two.

Lastly, imposing restrictions or requirements on contestants is something that destroys the very core of the contest. It's supposed to let the contestant come up with everything, from terraforming to choosing the time and era of the theme. It's presenting the contestant with a canvas and letting them draw their own design. I can imagine that the results can be as far apart as the north and south poles: no need to confuse things further with different canvases.

One design = one standard. One standard = easier and fairer rating. It provides the judges a way to directly compare contestants. Why not just keep it nice and simple?

Anyone intrested in RCT2 challanges? or rct3?

Not a contest, but just see if people can do stuff on any kind of restriction that the game has.

Or a knockout tournament style contest. People would sign up and the moderators would randomly select pairs of contestants for the first round, and the tournament would continue on a bracket and there would be finals and all that jazz.

Let's try and get something firmed up this week, and we can start a contest after the CP trip is over (around the 20th of June)--at least we can start sign-ups then.

Since we'll be close to 4th of July, want to do something "Patriotic" (sorry to all of you not in the US, and special apologies to you guys in England, but we love to show off our Red, White, and Blue for the 4th of July).

Patriotic contest sounds like fun. And I like the Bracket Style contest idea

You could also do the opposite of what Silver said. Have a layout with lots of theming and have the contestants make the trackwork and supports.

Also, we could do a team contest. One team member would do track, another would do supports, and another could do theming, etc. And it would be team against team.

We've already decided what we're going to do for this one. Thanks for the ideas. Sign-ups are now underway. You must sign up before the 21st to participate. We'll announce the contest officially (along with all the rules) on the 22nd.

Maybe we could have a contest where members have to come up with a new type of roller coaster?

I've thought about that one, though I know you are restricted to track pieces which are from coaster types that arleady exist when you build in No Limits or Roller Coaster Tychoon. I encourge anyone that uses Blender and can export it to NL (I'm not sure that the files can be exported to RCT3). If anyone has questions on how to do this, I think Kevin Dice has writter or will be writing a tutorial on it.

you know the nolimits tracks that people post on this site, why don't there be a prize for the person whose nolimits track gets downloaded the most times?

Participants wouldn't be on a level playing field with a contest like that, because some files would only be there for a couple days, while others in that area have been there for years. Also, there are many ways in which a scoring system like that could be abused. We could add something like that to our Golden Loop Awards (annual site awards) if we don't have that already. Nominations for new categories are over, but we can make a note to add it to the list for next year's awards.

The "prize" for the GLA's is pretty much bragging rights until the next year, and most people that win an award put something about it in their sig.

I just thought of an idea to have a RCT contest where you have to construct a park, at least 3 coasters, but they have to be in-game designs.  They can't be custom.
