Yahoo put this out, which came up in my facebook feed via social reader or whatever that nifty app is that keeps me up to date on news since I don't read it elsewhere.
http://games.yahoo.c..._0Eu3dW5X1E#_=_

Of course the list is a joke. Superman Krypton Coaster, really? I could be wrong though but who knows, it's an opinionated thing anyways. I can't imagine 75% of coaster riders think it's scary, or any coaster on this list for that matter. The people that do are also likely scared of a simple out and back 50mph wooden joyride.

Discuss.

To the (other) point of this thread, Batman!

What are some of the scariest coasters you've been on? Granted we're all pretty fearless, but admit it. There has been at least one or two coasters that you have been kind of nervous on. For me Hypersonic scared me to the point of not having the gonads to ride it. It wasn't until it's farewell season that I rode it. Not a coaster, but Vanish Point at Water Country was absolutely terrifying. I was shaking when I got into the capsule, but I loved it. I had such an adrenaline rush.

(BTW, old topic's last post was July '09. Plus this has an article y'all can discuss. And honestly, I'm just doing this to skip thermo homework. Kind of)

On the article- At least Kingda Ka, I305 and Big Shot make sense. Heck, I get goosebumps before embarking on TTD and Millennium Force. They're really tall. Big Shot has the advantage of altitude (you come to a final altitude of over 1,000 ft above the ground, yikes) though, ITS NOT A ROLLER COASTER! The other 2 aren't that bad after the first go around.

As said, my nerves to get shaken up with most things of sufficient height. Once we're talking 300+ ft, I tend to get the jitters. Some of the quicker launch coasters, especially ones with a good build up, also get my adrenalin pumping. Most of the time, its just that I allow myself to get scared. Flight of Fear and TTD especially have great build ups to their launches. FoF has the queue video plus the mysterious nature of the ride, and TTD has blaring sounds of engines plus the racing x-mas lights from red to green. MF probably pulls off 300 ft better than I305 as to me, being by a massive body of water (a Great Lake or the ocean) gives an illusion of being higher.

Mystery Mine had some nice points where I got scared, mostly from the pre-lift and the sudden drops. The last lift and following drop had a great build up. The building made the lift look twice as big, plus the holding brake before plummeting is a nice touch. My first time on Tennessee Tornado, I didn't realize that the first drop was subterranean, so that tunnel really took me by surprise, especially because my first time on it was in the back, so it really sneaked up on me.

I also have to admit that Beast almost scared me out of coaster riding for good back in my younger days. However, Top Gun (Flight Deck) made me gravitate back, and back to back night rides for Vortex (first time) and Beast brought me to love them. I also have to admit my first time getting on Magnum wasn't easy. I would go on every other coaster at CP no problem in terms of height, but something about 200 ft eluded me and I had to circle back at night to get myself on it, which now I make it a routine to do Magnum at night upon every visit to Sandusky.

Nice discussion topic! I can agree with Ka, I305, and even Toro being on that list. But I don't really think those are the top 5 for scary rides. Just scary rides that most people know about. I think rather then tell, I'll show here. My Top 5 Scary Rides:
  • Tower of Terror - Gold Reef City
  • Nemesis - Alton Towers
  • Sky Scraper (formerly Starry Night Ripper) - World Joyland
  • Wild Mouse - Blackpool Pleasure Beach
  • Blue Flash - some guy's backyard in Indiana

This side of eternity is short - make the most of it.

Yes, Tower of Terror and Blue Flash are definitely rides that would scare me, ToT for its forces, and Blue Flash because its homemade. Some rides that would also scare me are that new drop tower at SFMM, when I first rode Kingda Ka, and probably Tower of Terror down at Disney when I first rode that.

I'd sooner be worried about Blue Flash's forces than Tower of Terror's. That loop looks like a neck-snapper.

Gold Reef's ToT doesn't scare me because of the forces. Its everything else about that ride that is psychological torture. Everything from the slow elevator lift through the mine structure, to the fact that its a very real, very old mine structure, to the ridiculous, twisting 90* drop through the structure that makes it look past vertical and then pounding into a rather long tunnel. There's just a lot of good stuff to that ride, especially considering how short its length is.

also, I forgot that Demon Drop does scare me a little, especially right before it drops, because of all the tension.

I'm not big on a coaster list not made by a fanatic (like us). Anyway, they did bring up a nice topic.

Comments:
-- I would have to put Top Thrill over Kingda Ka. With its "more open" restraints its more scary and a lot better!

-- I haven't ridden 305, Steel Dragon, or Leviathan yet. Millennium Force is the scariest giga so far. Having another hill that's in the 200ft. range and using just lap bars would make me think than any of the others would beat out that Intimidator in this way.

-- El Toro does have some big drops for a wooden. It's a little too wild a ride for me (dare I say rough). I'm just glad that it let us keep our heads too!

-- Anyone know the name of the coaster where the whole track leans forward before the train is released down the hill? (It might be in Asia.)

-- How do you guys feel about vertical lifts? Do Fahrenheit, Hollywood Rip, Ride, Rockit, Dare Devil Dive, Mystery Mine, or Green Lantern make you wonder why you got on the thing? X Coaster was crazy! I haven't been out to the Rocky Mountains since I was much younger. With Wicked at Lagoon in Utah, I may want to go to a couple of parks too. http://rcdb.com/3534.htm?p=30557

-- Are you scared by going 90 degrees down too? I like Griffon and SheiKra. Going into the ground on Oblivion may be a bit much. http://rcdb.com/777.htm?p=8197 Of course with the dive machines you are also floorless hanging out over just the ground. That may remind us of the new B&M's, the winged coasters - Wild Eagle and X-Flight. Will they be "scary" ?

I don't have a problem with any drops 90+ degrees, nor any steep lifts. I think the general consensus here is that shear height is pretty scary. When you read something like 305 feet it doesn't phase you. The human mind cannot fathom that until you're looking up the lift hill. That is when that height becomes scary. I'd say Millenium Force is scarier with just a lap-bar and the water beside you. I get pretty scared of rides like Kingda Ka and TTD just because of their height too, and I haven't even seen it.

Tower of Terror at Disney World did scare me, but just the scenery.

Most roller coasters don't scare me. It's honestly flat rides that usually scare me.

No order...

Giant Drop (SFGAm)
Demon Drop
TTD while waiting to be launched
Zeus (I fear for my life... and my back. Or the other way around.)
Actually, anything at Mt Olympus. Not safe.

The last two times I was scared on a coaster were the first time I rode MF and the first time I rode TTD. MF was a height issue since before that the tallest ride I had done was a whole 100 ft shorter in Magnum. TTD is just the anticipation leading up to the launch. Neither really get to me anymore since I've ridden MF so many times and I know the launch sequence of TTD to the point where its not a surprise anymore.

That being said, drop towers get me every time. I have to do some serious thinking as to whether I want to put myself through the torture whenever someone wants me to ride the green side of Power Tower.

I was pretty nervous the first time I rode Millennium Force and Kingda Ka, but nothing compared to the terror I experienced during the climb to the top of my first Skycoaster. Actually, prior to my first ride on a Zipper I experienced a pretty close, albeit slightly different fear.

^I believe the tilt-track coaster you are trying to think of is Gravity Max (http://www.coaster-n...08-gravity-max/). I think there are others out there too, but that is usually the first one that people think of.

I agree. Hades was a rough scary crazy ride. Nothing else was worth waiting an hour for to get on their piece of broken down junk. They were working on Zeus's track all the way until after 3:00, yet they still opened it just a little bit later that day. Don't they need state inspectors to look at it if they did that much work?

Under Vekoma "Tilt Coaster" that is the only one rcdb has. I don't fear death, but if something goes wrong that would be a very painful way to go.

This was totally insane.

My 30+ year old son made us go on in with a whole bunch of 5 year olds. He was video taping and pretending to be scared.

Actually there are some wild mice that bounce you from side to side so much that you wonder if you are really going to need medical care. Someone riding Exterminator (Kennywood) or Ragin' Cajun (SFGAM) might need help.

This is the first time this has happened, but I actually had the fear of falling out on the drop of New Texas GIant.

Currently, the only roller coasters that scare me areMillenium Force and TTD. Millenium Force because it has very open trains with only lap bars and takes you up slowly to over 300 feet, which is torture for me. I still refuse to ride the left side of the train because there is no set of stairs on that side and just a sheer drop to the water. TTD scares me as well, because it is a very open train with only lap bars that goes 120 mph. Actually, very open trains in general scare me. I always try to get harnesses as tight as possible, forgoing the honored tradition of trying to get an extra click for some more air, simply because that much freedom on a hunk of meddle going 120 mph terrifies me. I perfer being tight and secure on my rides.

Now, if we venture into flat ride territory, I'm scared of almost everything. Drop Towers (Though oddly not space shots), Top Spins, and some dark rides can scare me, usually only until I'm actually on and reality sets in that it is not nearly as bad as I expected (Excepting drop towers; still perfer not to ride those).

Skyrush can be rather scary on the edge seats. I feel completely unrestrained as if I'm about to just fall out.

Oh yes, I forgot about Skyrush. That was probably the scariest ride for me at CP, mainly because of I was desperatly trying to keep my camera from falling and the fact it had closed while we were in the queue for high winds several times.

A little late to the party, but Saw: the Ride at Thorpe Park. Both the pre-lift and the first drop scared me, not because of the beyond vertical drops, but because of theming, Thorpe Park did a great job with the ride. Stealth and their tower also did a little bit, but no where near how scared I got on Saw.

Bizarro just because you feel somewhat vunerable, but other than that I can't say many rides have scared me recently

The rollercoaster I fear the most is Green Lantern First Flight. Those small freefalls get me all the time and it's VERY Intense for me where it soft straps leave me brused.

The Flat Ride I fear is Mickey's Fun Wheel. That thing is insane Swing almost 90* on a moving ferris wheel. No. xD
