With clearing done and full blow construction most likely starting in the next month or so, I thought it was time to get a thread going for this. I'll start if off with a snippet of Montagna Magica's PTR that he just posted from the park:

I Just got back, recently, from an awesome day at the park! Here is a little picture update for you; complete with construction of Log Jammer's replacement.

Posted Image

Magic Mountain's new 2013 attraction! "Desert: The Experience". Awww yeah!

Posted Image

I think our predictions about this ride might actually pretty far off-base. I was told by a park employee, who was handing out surveys, that the ride would be "like Kingda Ka at Six Flags Great Adventure". She mentioned that it would break a height record, and make use of Metro's old tunnel for a launch. I know I'm not the first guy to hear stuff like this from park employees who hand out surveys.

Posted Image

I decided to push my luck and ask her if she knew the manufacturer. She didn't, but now we know it will be a launched coaster (rules out the giga possibility).

Posted Image

Whatever this is, it should be opening next summer!

Posted Image

One last construction picture, just for kicks!

Here are my thoughts; I don't care what any park employee says - if they tell you anything that hasn't already been announced, you can pretty much write it off as a guarantee that that is not what the park is getting. I've talked with lots of people at lots of different levels of theme park management and no one is allowed to leak details about upcoming rides unless it is a "publicity leak." So basically if she was actually telling the truth, I'll bet she has now been fired.

Also, I just really can't see MM putting in a strata coaster. A launch coaster yes, they could use a good launch coaster, but not a strata coaster. It'd be pointless with Superman - Escape from Krypton already in the park, and by building Lex Luthor on the tower complex, they've basically guaranteed that S-EfK isn't going anywhere. But picture something along the lines of iSpeed that utilizes the great terrain that SFMM sits on - now that would be truly epic!

I know I'm not the only person who has been told details about the new ride from a park employee who was handing out surveys. This has happened several times in the last few weeks. It's definitely an intentional publicity stunt by the park.

On second thought, what the park employee said actually does make sense with the rumors going around. When she compared it to Kingda Ka, perhaps that was just the easiest way for her to portray a fast launch coaster (since even most of the general public know a little about the tallest coaster in the world).

The rumors are, it's going to be a terrain multi-launch coaster including the world's tallest inversion. Perhaps that inversion is the "height record" the employee was referring to.

Personally, I'm pulling for that multi-launcher myself. Whether it's Premier Rides or Intamin, it's gonna be an awesome addition to the park!

The thing that gets me, is if she knows Kingda Ka and what it is then she at least knows a good bit of information. The tallest inversion is Volcano, which is a multi launch coaster. Maybe we can expect something like that? I'd love to see another Volcano esque ride!

I'm actually going to guess that this will either be a Premier launcher like Superman at SFDK but faster and taller (plus a bit more of a layout) or a Maurer Sohne launched X car. The x-cars have the skyloops which have exceeded 150 ft, and they're capable of launches. Premier would be ideal as they just did the Superman ride and they have similar characteristics to the x-car, at least in what we've seen the new Premier stock has been designed for with Sky Rocket and Superman.

I'm hesitant to say Intamin as I'm not sure they can get a fast enough launch for what's been rumored in such a small amount of space (unless they do an impulse like ride like Superman at SFDK). I know the hydraulic launches and LSM's are pretty explosive in their launches, but I still don't think this will be Intamin. S&S Power could pull this off too, but they haven't put inversions on their air launch coasters yet.

Mike, I like the way you're thinking. I would love to see an S&S launcher with a super tall inversion. Or here's a thought. How about a taller Premier inverted top hat? It wouldn't be that hard to put one of those on a 200 ft or so tower and achieving the first "hyper inversion".

Let's not forget about the Metro tunnel. That has been confirmed in many ways, and even appeared prominently on some surveys from the park.

I love Mr.Freeze. I wish that there was more talk about their changes. (I understand why though, because there are only two, they are only about 500 miles apart, and stuck in the middle of the country.) Anyway, I am sure that they reach 218 ft. somewhere else, but there is no doubt that this is a very tall inversion. We just need a little more to it.

If you look at this picture -clicky- you'll see that the top of the inversion is approximately 3/5 of the way up the vertical spike. Now the top of the vertical spike is that 218 ft that is listed on RCDB as the ride's height, so assuming the inversion to be roughly 3/5 of that, you would be upside down at 130.8 ft.

Now for a random question, am I the only person here who thinks that going through a 200 ft tall vertical loop would be absolutely amazing?

Finally we start to see this rumor gain some speed (no pun intended). I'd like to see a terrain-hugging multi-launch. I loved Cheetah Hunt, and if you made part of it tunneled and threw in a massive loop, I would be smelling win all over the place.

That's exactly what we've been hearing from Screamscape! I know, it's not always reliable, but you can always hope!

And although we have to take all these rumors with a grain of salt, Screamscape is usually the place I go to for rumored information. I always believed in being "last and right" rather than "first and wrong" but Screamscape always has new info to read and usually that's the first place you hear information.

So far the rumors are leaning toward Premier not Intamin. I guess that means we go better and badder than
Sky Rocket or Superman UF. Ok guys, it sounds like you did a great job at SFDK, now head south and see
what you can get into. If it were a 400 ft. hydraulic launcher like Kingda Ka or Top Thrill Dragster that
would be great, but with Superman: EFK already there, I don't think that they will go that big. A monster size
LIM or LSM from Premier should work and be more reliable.

They have been real good about saying RUMOR if there are few actual facts yet. Basically they are dealing with things that are a work in progress. They also have pictures and videos of construction and completed working rides.

I have a hard time picturing SFMM adding another LIM launching, giant power drain to the park.

^The only reason Superman takes so much power is that is was the first coaster to use LSMs at the time (which are VASTLY different than LIMs) plus the fact they are 15 ton cars going 100 mph in 7 seconds. LSMs and LIMs now are more energy efficient now that the industry has had a decade and a half to improve them. That said, I think SFMM could use another launch coaster. I don't think their issues with Superman back in 1997 will hamper their decision to add another launcher at all.

And with a park THAT big with THAT many coasters, I have no issues with them putting in another launcher at all. Especially if they are going to try some sort of record breaker.

Yeah...I just checked RCDB. Only 1 of 17 is a launch coaster. They could definitely use another one.

SFMM would go for a record breaker after they just became the roller coaster capital of the world, just to taunt CP a little bit more. ;)

Like I've said, taunting Cedar Point isn't going to do anything, but make Six Flags Magic Mountain feel all high and mighty.

I personally would love to see Premier Rides make a big comeback with a good sized launch roller coaster. Always been a fan of their roller coasters and Superman Ultimate Flight and Sky Rocket have kind of prepared them for a full scale comeback. I honestly never expected them to be back, but they wait until the market started to fall back down to them and then pounced on it.

Six Flags Magic Mountain has been clearing land since Log Jammer came out so I am expecting big things here.

I can't think of any Six Flags park that tried it, but Cedar Fair did this:
Cedar Point - Maverick (LSM), Top Thrill Dragster (Hydraulic Launch), Wicked Twister (LIM)
Kings Dominion - Back Lot Stunt Coaster (LIM), Flight of Fear (LIM), HyperSonic XLC (Compressed Air Launch), Volcano (LIM)

I too am glad to see Premier back in the game. Actually they didn't take a break; it's just that their 2008 and 2010 coasters were killed by the parks that they were in (Hard Rock and Nascar Café).

Well, Cedar Fair inherited the launch coasters at KD. They were all added by Paramount. Also, don't forget King Kobra (weight drop launch), which was added during the Taft days.

Seeing as none of the other of next years big projects have done very well keeping secrets, has anyone heard anything new out of SFMM? The official announcement is only about 10 days away.

This is about what I thought it would be, though I have to admit its a bit more extensive with that pass by the Superman plaza. I'm also digging the use of the tunnel, but why in the world does it have that pointless backwards launch? If it didn't have that, I'd like it a little better in the capacity department. The ending is a bit anti-climactic as well. Is an interesting ride to be sure, but it doesn't come without a few pointless bits as well.
