Battlestar Galactica: The Battlestar Galactica dueling coaster has entered its final stage of testing, and the park hopes to reopen it in March or April 2011

After being closed for about 9 months, Universal Studios Singapore’s big new attraction for the 2010 season, Battlestar Galactica, is entering the final phase of testing. The park is now performing “daytime stress-testing” according to Theme Park Tourist, since the day experiences a wider array of temperatures, which affect the expansion and contraction of metal components on the coaster and track.

Back in March of this year, after just one week of operation, the ride was closed due to a fault or malfunction, but no report of why was made. It wasn’t until August that the park released details stating that a seat had flown off one of the trains during a routine test. Fatigue cracks, which formed in the welds that attach the seat to the trains, caused one of the seats to shear off the ride, though the park remained mum about which train it may have come from. Vekoma, the rides manufacturer, has replaced those welded parts with machined ones.

Located in the parks “Sci-Fi City,” Battlestar Galactica is a unique new breed of dueling coaster, which perhaps takes at least some of its influence from the Dueling Dragons roller coaster at Universal’s Islands of Adventure. The ride features not only two unique layouts, but two different types of coasters which duel and interact with each other. The two sides are: the Cyclon, an inverted coaster featuring multiple inversions; Human, a sit-down coaster which is more family-oriented.

The park also had problems with its family boat ride, Madacascar: A Crate Adventure, which was also supposed to open with the park, but several delays have pushed the parks opening back to the 2011 season. Along with bringing these two attractions online full-time finally, Universal Studios Singapore is also planning on opening Transformers: The Ride, a “Spiderman-like” attraction, but featuring the Transformers characters seen in the blockbuster movies from the past few years. Thought he park has not set a firm opening date, officials are hoping for a March or April 2011 opening.
