Disney California AdventureMulholland Madness, a Wild Mouse style roller coaster at the currently redeveloping Disney California adventure, is receiving a make-over for the 2012 season. This will be part of California Adventure’s 5-year, 1.1 billion dollar renovation, according to the Los Angeles Times.
Mulholland Madness, formerly named after famous engineer William Mulholland and themed to the busy traffic of Southern California freeways, is almost ready to open with its new makeover. Disney unplugged called it “...a forgettable, poorly themed ride...” and that “[it] represents to many the initial failed concept of the park.” According to the Los Angeles Times, the entire park had a reputation for being “cheap,” at least by Disney’s standards.
The new premise that is based on a 1940‘s Disney cartoon, Goofy’s Glider will be about Goofy trying to teach young pilots how to fly, claims Theme Park Tourist. Not surprisingly, as it is Goofy teaching the class, things go awry.
The ride’s layout will stay the same and feature sharp turns, quick drops, and sudden stops, according to Theme Park Tourist. Its new theming, however, will consist of “clouds” that the planes will fly through, billboards that display flying tips, and a redesigned exterior for the ride vehicles, including a winglet on the nose, TPT continues.
Mulholland Madness used to contain billboards and a Giant roadmap, which was retrofitted to the side of the track to disguise the fact that it was a run-of-the-mill Wild Mouse which can be found at almost any amusement park in the country. The cars used to be shaped and designed to replicate real motor vehicles.
Disney California Adventure opened in 2001 adjacent to Disneyland as part of the Disneyland Resort. It boasted 5 themed sections of the park, all centered around California’s rich heritage. It is investing 1.1 billion dollars into giving the park a face lift and a new mantra. What was once cheesy California-based theming will soon be invaded by the familiar Disney characters that are a prominent staple of the other parks, according to the Los Angeles Times. Other additions, aside from the rethemed Goofy’s Sky School, include The Little Mermaid: Ariel’s undersea Adventure, Mickey’s Fun Wheel, Silly Symphony Swings, and Radiator Springs; a brand new section of the park themed to the recent Disney movie Cars. Radiator Springs will contain a 200 million dollar investment: Radiator Springs Racers, utilizing Test Track technology seen on the popular EPCOT attraction.
Disney has also alluded to the fact that Goofy’s Flight School will be a placeholder for an upcoming E-Ticket attraction, once more funds are secured. In 2009, Disney California Adventure saw its highest attendance in its decade of existence, reaching 6.05 million guests. Disney hopes with its continued expansion and renovation to bring California Adventure up to par with the quality of the rest of their parks. The ride is set to re-open with its new theme on June 3.
