Scandia Screamer Returns
Ride back up and running after accident
May 18, 2012 - Coasterholic14
Sacramento, California - According to the Sacramento Bee, The Scandia Screamer extreme thrill ride at Scandia Family Fun Center is finally set to hurtle riders 165 feet through the air once again after an accident last August had shut down the ride and prompted an investigation. Scandia Screamer was set to begin swinging once again as of Friday May 18 at around 3 p.m. The ride had been closed for nearly 8 months.
According to the report from the Sacramento Bee, Cal-OSHA was sent out to investigate an accident that involved two workers who were injured in an accident when a crane collapsed. Their investigation found that the accident on August 30, 2011 was caused by improper rigging, which underestimated the weight of the ride pieces that were being dismantled. When the worker and crane operator were trying to remove part of the ride, the Screamer slid off the post holding it up, fell to the ground, and tipped the crane as it fell, injuring both works and crushing one’s arm.
Upon completing both internal and external investigations of the ride and the cause of the accident, many of the rides main components were replaced; the ride now features new booms/arms, and a new chair. Last week, Scandia Maintenance and Operations Manager Brian Nichols had his examination of the ride according to the Sacramento Bee, and he and state inspectors have given the ride the “go-ahead” to return it to operation.
Following on the heels of “The Screamer,” Scandia is looking to open a new ride, dubbed the Scrambler, within the next few weeks or so.
