There’s a whole new beast flying in the skies over Malton, UK, and it’s one that dates its history back millions of years ago. Pterodactyl, Flamingoland’s newest attraction, opened this past week at the UK park, swinging riders high over the park below. The ride is a “tower swing” attraction from Zamperla, which stands 150 feet tall as it spins riders through the air, according to Theme Park Tourist.

First word and rumors of the ride began back in April this year, after Flamingoland applied to add a 46-metre (150 ft) “vertical swing” ride at the park. Some speculation thought, or at least hoped, it may be an S&S Screamin’ Swing, but most pointed to the far more obvious “Star Flyer” ride. Turns out, that’s exactly what they got, though this particular model comes from Zamperla, it’s the exact same style of “tower swing” ride which has been sweeping the world lately. Over the past few years, Cedar Fair has been installing Mondial WindSeekers and Six Flags has been going with Funtime Star Flyers at many of their parks, with other parks worldwide seeming to follow suit.

Earlier in the month, the ride began undergoing testing before its first day of operation in early July. At this time, the park had yet to add in all the surrounding themeing elements, but since then finished it up and after the completion of its “soft opening,” the ride is now fully operational at the park. The ride stands tall at the center of the “Primeval” section of the park, themed around the Stone Age, and incorporates “animal print sails,” according to a report from Theme Park Tourist.

From the park website: “July 2012 sees fear take to the skies at Flamingo Land Resort with our latest, truly terrifying ride…”
