Another Guinness World Record Broken

Man Rides Ferris Wheel for 30 hours

August 6, 2012 - Tyler Carlton

Edmonton, Canada - The "Coaster Wars" for the world's fastest and tallest coasters have stalled out a bit in recent years, but that hasn't stopped Guinness World Records from being broken all across the amusement park landscape. The latest record to go down follows this trend as it focused on endurance rather than size or speed.

We all dream about riding our favorite rides over and over again without having to exit, but one man recently took that to a whole new level. Robbie Gibson of Canada broke the record for the longest ride on a theme park attraction after riding a Ferris wheel for 30 hours according to The Vancouver Sun.

Gibson went for glory on the Ferris wheel at Edmonton's Capital Ex, which is a large summer festival located in the Canadian Province of Alberta. His official time came in at 30 hours and 35 seconds. This blew away the previous record by a total of more than five hours.

Time was on his side as the ride was shut down shortly after Gibson exited the ride due to lightning, according to The Vancouver Sun. A representative from the Guinness Book of World Records was on hand to monitor the attempt and grant Gibson an official certificate confirming him as the new record holder.

In order to prepare for the event Gibson told The Vancouver Sun that he spent hours riding elevators and spending time on the swings at the park. After exiting the ride he told reporters that the hardest part of the whole challenge was dealing with chapped lips caused by the wind.

More came out of the event than just a new record. The event was done for charity and ended up raising $1,500 for the Boys & Girls Club Big Brothers Big Sisters of Edmonton and Area.
