The killer whale Shouka is calling a new park home after she recently made a journey across California. Shouka used to reside at Six Flags Discovery Kingdom in Vallejo, California, but now she is a member of the crew at SeaWorld San Diego.
The drive between the two parks is around 500 miles, or around 8 1/2 hours despite both parks being located in California. Due to this large distance Shouka was transported via plane in a C-130 according to NBC7. She landed at the San Diego International Airport at around 5:50AM last Monday.
The task of transporting a whale via plane is not an easy one. She had to be restrained by a sling within her giant foam-padded container to make sure she couldn't move and be injured in transit. According to park officials the container weighed around weight 38,000 pounds once it was filled up with water. After landing Shouka was loaded onto a flatbed truck to finish the rest of the journey to her new home.
The move comes as a result of some compatibility issues between Shouka and a bottle nose dolphin at Six Flags. A search new companion that would allow her to stay at Six Flags turned out unsuccessful. Veterinarians are hoping that the 19 year old Shouka can find suitable companions at SeaWorld, according to NBC7.
Representatives from SeaWorld have not given a specific date that Shouka will begin performing, but they said that they planned on it being soon.
