Rye Playland introduces new ride ratings

Park will use new rating system as result of boy's death

March 11, 2006 - Josh Davidson

Rye Playland, Rye, NY, USA - Back in August, a young boy died at Playland amusement park in Rye, New York. Investigations concluded that Jon-Kely, the boy who died, climbed out of his boat and then fell to his death. Because of this, state senators are now considering a rating system for amusement park rides. This system will be similar to the movie rating system. "We have no choice but to make immediate changes so that they are in place prior to the opening of our amusement parks," said Sen. Nicholas Spano. If it is planned to be official, it would be all set by this summer. The system would be similar to the rating system used by movies, but instead they would use: made to frighten you, sudden drops and falls, frightening and dark, and many others. Joseph Montalto, director of Playland, now provides patrons with brochures pointing out the dark rides. When asked his reaction to a more detailed requirement, he said, "We would consider anything. We want people to be informed. We want people to be safe." He added, however, that "We find we end up sweeping up a great many of the brochures we hand out." There is no set date on when this will become active and if this will happen. But, many state senators are looking to it.
