Amazing Adventures of Spider-Man

Islands of Adventure

Last Update: March 7, 2011

If you haven't heard of the Amazing Adventures of Spider-Man, you have been living under a rock for the last few years. It is a 3D moving motion simulator ride. What is that exactly? Well, just keep on reading to find out. To take a ride on one of the most complicated rides in any park, you will have to travel to Marvel Super Hero Island at Islands of Adventure in Orlando, Florida. On the attraction you go on a crazy adventure with no one other than Spider-man himself. Some of the evil villains from the comics have gathered to create a weapon which they hope will destroy Spider-man, and everything else that comes into their way.

If you want the ride to be a total surprise for you, you should stop reading now. After walking through the greatly themed queue line, you enter the boarding platform and take your seat on these vehicles called "scoops." You are supposedly a reporter sent out to get some interesting story. As you turn around the first corner you see the Spider Signal cast upon the wall in front of you, even though Spider-man doesn't really have a signal like Batman. You immediately go to try to find the trouble, and it doesn't take long to find it.

You first run into Spider-man as he is on his way to stop his villains, and he warns you on how this could be the most dangerous night of your lives (and his!). From then on it's one long great action filled story. Many different special effects are used in the ride, including fire and large objects being hurled off the ground as the villains attempt to seize you. Spider-man also uses the 3D in great ways. In the beginning it simulates Spider-man jumping on your "scoop," and later on bricks are flying your way as one of Spider-man's enemies break through a brick wall. There are many more uses for it as well, including a huge simulated drop at the end, which has you falling from one of the tallest buildings in New York City.

After an intense battle, where you join in on the action and fight to save your life, Spider-man is victorious and you make it back to the home base in one piece. The level of detail in the ride is amazing, and it should take you a few rides to notice most of all the little things Universal Studios has put on the ride. Even as you exit the theming is getting pumped out in full throttle, which is noticeable by the office located above the exit.

Okay, you can read again if you wish, the spoilers are over. So you make it back to the station and wonder, how exactly did Universal put this all together? The attraction uses a mix of film screens, of where your 3D glasses come in handy, real world props that are set up through out the ride, and of course the special effects I mentioned in the last paragraph. Universal has set up different scenes inside the building, where your "scoop" travels from scene to scene, where all the action takes place.

Everything put together makes it seem you like you getting thrown around New York City, but in reality you haven't done more than get tossed side to side and travel a few feet thanks to the vehicles. Combine it all and you have one of the most technologically advanced rides in the world. Due to the tremendous success of the Orlando version, Universal decided to put a version of it in their Japanese park located Osaka, Japan.
