Indiana Jones Adventure

Disneyland

Last Update: January 9, 2013

It was a rainy March day in 1995. The crowd at Disneyland at Disneyland Resort, Anaheim, CA, was immense. Today was the opening day of Disneyland's newest adventure. The lines for the new and hyped attraction stretched all the way out of Adventureland and into Tomorrowland. This new ride was Indiana Jones and the Temple of the Forbidden Eye. Ever since its opening day on March 3, 1995, the ride has been a crowd pleaser and has been highly regarded as one of the best theme park attractions on the planet.

The 3 minute, 15 second adventure will send you through an ancient temple that seems like nobody has touched or even laid an eye on it in thousands of years. Along the course of the ride, you will visit chambers such as the Chamber of Destiny, Cavern of Bubbling Death, and the famous Rolling Rock Ball scene. The ride was manufactured by Intamin AG and was created by Walt Disney Imagineering and uses the same ride technology as Dinosaur at Disney's Animal Kingdom. The ride system is basically a motion simulator on wheels, because even though it may seem like you are traveling over rocks and potholes, the ride is still moving along a guided track. Even though the ride is not fast at all (reaching a top speed of 22 mph), the darkness and wild turns and bumps make it seem as if it is going more than twice as fast as the ride is actually going.

The ride was another collaboration project between Disney and George Lucas, with the previous being the Indiana Jones Epic Stunt Spectacular show at Disney’s Hollywood Studios, and also Captain EO and Star Tours at the same park. Disney Imagineers thought up a ride so high tech for its time that they had to wait until technology advanced further before they could start building the ride. 400 Imagineers helped in the design and construction process for Indiana Jones, and the ride was ready to open in March of 1995.

However, the ride's queue is an attraction all in itself. It starts when you walk past an old military Mercedes Benz troop transport truck, like a vehicle you could be able to see in Raiders of the Lost Ark. Then you enter the temple. Along the roof of the temple are cheap mining lanterns that archaeologists use to see in mines and temples. These lights are very dim and add to the anticipation factor of the ride. Throughout the queue, you see ancient Mara-glyphics written on the wall that tell you of the peril and horrors that are hidden in the heart of the temple. But like every other major Disney attraction, you ignore these warnings and continue on.

Then, your adventure begins. Your vehicle is an old and worn World War II Jeep, and hopefully this will help you get through the temple safely. After the loading area, your car proceeds into the Chamber of Youth. There are three doors in this room which lead to The Fountain of Eternal Youth, The Chamber of Earthly Riches or the Observatory of the Future. You go through the door which is randomly picked, and you proceed to the Hall of Doom. At the tunnel there is a stone face that supposedly you aren't supposed to look into his eyes. But you do, and all hell breaks loose. From there on out, it becomes a crazy, wild ride.

Along the rest of the ride, you will enter rooms such as;

Cavern of Bubbling Death: Here you cross a rickety bridge as the stone Mara face shoots green lasers, everywhere the laser hits, it catches on fire. Watch out!

Snake Temple- Take a guess!

Mummy Chamber- a room in which skeletons pop up and try to get guests.

Dart Corridor- a long hallway in which giant stone warrior statues shoot darts at you after you have set off a booby trap.

One of the greatest film franchises of all time has been made nito a world class attraction. It's just some of Disney's magic. Let's just hope that they build more of these fantastic Indiana Jones attractions across the world!
