Stampida

PortAventura

Last Update: January 7, 2013

Racing Roller coasters are popular at several amusement parks, including ones overseas. Port Aventura is home to a wooden racer known as Stampida. A good number of Racers are out and back or figure-right designs, but what sets Stampida apart from the more common racers is its layout. Stampida's footprint is very small for a racing style coaster, and Stampida also breaks away at one point during the course so the two racing trains actually have a head on fly by. The rest of the time, the trains are racing side by side. Stampida is located at the almost northern most point of Port Aventura right next to the park's other woodie, Tomahawk. Stampida and Tomahawk actually intertwine throughout their courses. If one looked at the two from an aerial view, it would appear they would all be one roller coaster, as it is a large cluster of wooden twisted track twisting in and around itself multiple times.

Stampida was built by Custom Coasters International in time for the 1997 season at Port Aventura. It was designed by Dennis McNulty and Larry Bill. The eighty-four foot tall coaster reaches a speed of forty-six miles an hour, however this feels like ninety-two miles an hour when the two trains pass each other head on during the ride. Stampida takes roughly one minute and forty seconds to complete its 3,127 foot course. Trains consist of six cars, each with two rows (two people per row), allowing a total of twenty-four people to ride per ride. With it being a racing coaster, a total of forty-eight people experience Stampida at the same time.

Right out of the station the two racing trains make their way lift hill side by side. Once at the top, they make their way around a small ninety degree turn to the right and speed up quite rapidly down the coaster's first drop. The first drop dips below a section of Tomahawk. A wide turn to the right follows the first drop and this wide right turn actually consists of five sections of coaster right next to each other. Two are where the current train is, two more are where it is going to be in a few seconds, and the last is actually part of Tomahawk. Some more hills follow this track cluster, and then the two racing trains loop back around a leftward turn, over a couple more hills, and then each into a tunnel. Once they are out of the tunnels, riders on the trains will realize they are no longer side by side to their competitor as the train that raced into the right tunnel took a sharp turn to the right away from the train that entered the left tunnel. Once the trains exit the tunnels, they come around a giant turn in opposite directions, and this is where they have the head on fly by. The head on fly by is actually part of the five across track cluster mentioned earlier. After the head on fly by, the two trains quickly change their course to where they are racing side by side again for the last part of the ride. The train that entered the left tunnel actually changes its course the most after the fly by and makes a quick and sharp ninety degree turn to the left to meet up with the other side that simply just kept turning widely after the fly by. Once the trains meet up, a couple more hills are experienced simultaneously. The trains are then traveling at about ground level at this point and make one final wide turn to the right, leading into the break run, and finally back into the station. This final turn into the break run actually parallels a previous turn before the head on fly by, just at a lower level. Guests then get off the ride and ride again, or they can go to the nearby Tomahawk and experience it.
