Rewind Racers
Specific Type: Family Shuttle
|
Opened at a cost of $4 million in 1994, Adventure City was meant to be an expansion of Hobby City with a handful of family rides to draw in revenue as a cheaper alternative to Disneyland] and Knott’s Berry Farm. Five years later, the park added its first roller coaster with a 1950s Wild Mouse coaster it purchased from a company in Australia, which was named the “Tree Top Racers.” In 2012, that coaster was permanently closed, but the park promised a new family roller coaster would take its place. Originally slated for 2013, the plans for a new coaster got slightly delayed, but in February 2014, Adventure City proudly announced the addition of Rewind Racers.
At a cost of $2 million, the attraction instantly becomes the biggest single investment in the park’s history, and is half as much as the park originally invested for its opening. A product of Gerstlauer Amusement Rides GMBH, the family shuttle coaster will be the first of its kind in the US and only the second of its kind in the world, following Drayton Manor’s 2011 addition of the Vekoma equivalent with Ben 10 – Ultimate Mission. With design work done by R&R Creative Amusement Designs of Anaheim, CA, the building and queue are themed to the “Rewind Raceway” complete with tires, oil drums, gas tanks, checkered flags, sponsor signs and all. The ride starts as the train is hauled backwards up a hill to the “Pit Stop” shed perched high behind the station. After a brief pause, the train burns rubber out of the pit stall and blazes down through the station. The track rolls and rises to the left, up and over through a sweeping fan curve that curls back towards the station. At the last second, the vehicles bank to the right, rising, falling, and swooping through an undulating helix. A rising bunny hop gives a quick dose of airtime before pulling up hard back into the “Pit Stop,” parallel with the original lift segment. From here, the train loses momentum, reverses, and falls backwards through the track it just zoomed in on. Backwards over the bunny hop, rolling backwards through the helix, falling in reverse around the fan curve, and slowing through the back of the station before rolling back into the start position again. With a height restriction of just 39” Adventure City’s new Rewind Racers will continue to affirm the park’s promise of being the “Little Theme Park That’s Big on Family Fun.” |
