Superman: Tower of Power

Six Flags over Texas

Last Update: May 14, 2011

An Arlington, Texas park known across America as Six Flags over Texas is pushing the envelope for vertical freefall rides for the season of 2003 in blasting off a new thrillride of heroic proportions. Superman: Tower of Power arrives from S&S Power of Logan, Utah to debut as the tallest, fastest ride complex of its kind yet, consisting of three towers of steel rocketing riders through the sky like the Man of Steel at speeds of just over 50 miles an hour. The trio of white and blue, yellow, and red-colored Towers of Power rise 315 feet over the Texas soil to command over all of the Six Flags property's other thrill attractions, including 2001's Titan hypercoaster and the Oil Derrick observation tower. Utilizing S&S's specialty compressed air-driven pneumatic technology to give 16-passenger cars their ticket to speed, thrillseekers have the option to either experience an initial blast-off heading earthwards on Superman's Turbo Drop tower or get flung off in the more traditional Space Shot manner on the remaining two. Superman: Tower of Power (S: ToP) takes the place of the Missile Chaser and Air Racer flat rides as Six Flags Over Texas's second freefall-type non-coaster draw. S: ToP follows in the footsteps of the now-primative Wildcatter, a first-generation drop ride which remains in operation at the park to this day. The ride on S:ToP sends passengers up and back again over a vertical ride stretch totaling out at just over 250 feet, with a triangular structure connecting the towers at the top and a central American flag adorning the pinnacle.

Entering the line for Superman, future riders approach the towering complex. Thrillseekers must then choose their fates: rocket up, or blast down. Once the decisions are made, queuers are lined up to prepare for boarding. The time comes and guests are let onto the launch and loading pads to board any one of four sides of seating surrounding the the three red, yellow, and blue-spined towers. On two of the three rides, passengers pull down yellow shoulder restraints and sit waiting to be thrust into the stratosphere. The vehicle inches upwards and stops, feet dangling free. Without warning, a gush of compressed air blasts thrillriders straight up and pulling a few g's while they're at it, slipping the bonds of earth and flying into the unknown. In no time, the near-300-foot heights are reached, and... Wham! Riders are thrown back down, floating up, off of their seats. Near the bottom, the car is shot up again, coming back down and losing altitude over a series of two more trips. At the other tower, passengers are towed up off of the platform and every one of those feet to the top. Sitting over the park for several seconds, Superman challengers wait for the inevitable... Whoosh! The ride blasts downwards at gravity in acceleration, experiencing plentiful negative g's all the way down. Near the ground, the vertical direction reverses again and thrillseekers find themselves on the way back up. Gradually decelerating after a few more trips, feet are lowered back to solid ground.

Up, up, and away for ride lovers this year at Six Flags over Texas!
