When S&S burst onto the scene in 1994 with their Space Shot towers, no one thought that they would become a major force in the amusement industry later on. Little did everyone know that S&S was here to stay and nine years later that they would be one of the largest companies in the amusement business. In 2003, Stan Checkett introduced his newest batch of insane rides. The Screaming Squirrel was the most unique roller coaster designs ever seen, but the flat ride that S&S debuted was what took everyone’s breath away. SWAT uses compressed air to lift its riders 65-feet in the air and swing them like a giant fly swatter. Six Flags liked the ride so much that they purchased one for a park in their chain. It was

decided that SWAT would make its home at Six Flags Astroworld for the park’s thirty-fifth anniversary. The park had just lost the Texas Tornado roller coaster(now known as Zonga at SFMW) and the vacant spot was perfect for the new thrill ride along with a second new ride named Diablo Falls. SWAT has some impressive statistics for a thrill ride. The towers on the ride arm 65-feet tall, but the highest point on the ride when the arm is vertical is 105-feet. The arm also reaches a top speed of thirty mile-per-hour while it rotates.

Unfortunately, in 2005 Six Flags Astroworld opened for it's final season and was then permanently removed from the Six Flags roster. The rising debut of Six Flags Inc. forced the company to take drastic measures and try to cut the deficit by selling off the valuable real estate that Astroworld called home. Many of the existing rides were packed up and shipped to other Six Flags parks around the United States. Some will be reinstalled for the 2006 season, the fate of others remain uncertain. However, the park's two newest rides, Catapult and Splash Water Falls found a new home at Six Flags New England, where they will debut for the 2006 season.

Six Flags New England guests make their way through the park to find Catapult, the newest thrill sensation from S&S. The thrillseekers board one of the two seating platforms and secure the green over the shoulder restraints. Once all forty-eight seats are full, the ride starts in motion. The genius of compressed air is put to work and the platform rises to the top of the 65-foot high ride. Then everything starts to spin. The arm tumbles riders over and over. The riders are at a maximum height of 105-feet when the arm reaches its highest point, but not for long because soon after they are back at the ground. From off the ride, the motion of it makes it look like a giant fly swatter, which is where the name for this ride was derived. The ride completes two full rotations one way then stops and does the same thing twice in reverse. The arm finally comes to a stop and the compressed air is used once again to lower the dizzy riders back to the ground.

With rides like this coming from S&S, it makes you wonder what else the madman Stan Checkett has up his sleeve for the future.
